What is an implant removal procedure?

During an implant removal procedure, the orthopedic devices used to stabilize your pet’s joint or injury during the initial surgery—such as a TPLO—are removed. Implants include any material placed into your pet’s bones, including plates and screws, wire, nylon suture, or pins. This minor procedure is performed under general anesthesia using aseptic technique to prevent infection.

Why does my pet’s implant need to be removed?

Reasons for implant removal can vary, but usually involve persistent infection. Despite strict sterile techniques, implants can become sites for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Fortunately, once the bone is healed, the implant is no longer needed and can be safely removed.

Will this affect my pet’s recovery?

In most cases, when implant removal is recommended, your pet’s original injury has already fully healed. Orthopedic implants are placed to stabilize the bone while it heals, not provide permanent support. Once healing is complete, the implant is no longer needed for joint stability or function.

If an infection develops around an implant, removal is often the most effective way to fully resolve the infection and allow complete healing. Removing the implant typically does not negatively affect the joint or your pet’s long-term recovery.

Your veterinarian may also recommend a culture and sensitivity test of the implant and/or surrounding tissue. This test identifies the specific bacteria causing the infection and helps determine which antibiotics will be most effective in clearing it.

What should I expect during my pet’s recovery?

Since your pet will have a new incision, they’ll need to wear an e-collar until the sutures or staples are removed. This is key to preventing or worsening infection. If there are additional restrictions or instructions about your pet’s recovery, our team will review them with you at your pet’s discharge appointment.
