What is cherry eye surgery?

Cherry eye surgery involves the surgical replacement of the third eyelid gland. The nictitating membrane, or “third eyelid,” is a thin membrane located in the inner corner of the eye. Cherry eye develops when a tear gland located within the third eyelid prolapses out of the pocket of tissue it normally fits into, causing a red or pink cherry-like mass in the corner of the eye. Persistent cherry eye can lead to irritation, injury, and dry eye.

Although cherry eye removal was once common, the modern approach focuses on preserving the gland and normal tear function. This is done by securing the third eyelid in place with a permanent suture and, in some cases, trimming the cartilage attached to the eyelid.

When is cherry eye surgery recommended?

Cherry eye surgery is indicated when the third eyelid gland is visibly protruding. In addition, the eye may be red and irritated, and your pet may rub their face on the floor or attempt to scratch their eye with their paws.

Cherry eye is most common in dogs. Although any breed can be affected, it is more common in young dogs and certain breeds. One or both eyes may be affected.

What can I expect during my pet’s recovery?

Cherry eye surgery is a relatively straightforward procedure, as is recovery. Home care includes monitoring your pet for signs of discomfort, irritation, or swelling. Your pet may need to wear an e-collar during the initial post-operative period to prevent them from scratching or irritating the eye. Topical eye drops may be prescribed.

Prompt surgery reduces the risk of relapse, which can occur if the eyelid has been prolapsed for some time.
