What is amputation surgery for pets?

Amputation is the surgical removal of a pet’s body part, such as a forelimb, hindlimb, or digits (toes).

Amputation surgery at Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital includes multi-modal pain management before, during, and after the procedure. In addition to supporting your pet’s comfort, this level of pain control (analgesia) helps accelerate healing and reduce stress.

When is amputation recommended for pets?

Amputation may be recommended for various reasons, including:

  • Cancer
  • Severe trauma (e.g., hit by a car, degloving injury)
  • Birth defect
  • Non-functional or non-healing limb
  • Limb repair is not a viable or cost-effective option

Do amputee pets have a good quality of life?

Dogs and cats generally adapt well after limb amputation. By learning to shift their center of gravity and redistribute their weight to the remaining three legs, “tripod” dogs and cats can live relatively normal lives. While it may look a little different, many return to running, jumping, and playing!

What can I expect from my pet’s recovery?

Digit amputation

Recovery from digit amputation involves monitoring your pet’s incision and ensuring they wear an e-collar at all times to prevent them from licking or chewing the amputation site. Your pet may limp during the initial post-operative period, but should return to normal weight bearing with time. Your veterinarian will prescribe pain medication to improve healing and minimize discomfort.

Limb amputation

After limb amputation, pets often need significant physical support as they adjust to their new normal. In addition to standard post-operative care and medications, our team will help you understand how to support your pet’s safety and comfort. This may include:

  • Using a mobility aid, such as a sling or body harness
  • Providing a pet-proof recovery space at home
  • Modifying your home with pet ramps and rugs
  • Consulting a veterinary rehabilitation specialist

If your pet has cancer

Your veterinarian will follow up to discuss your pet’s treatment options or refer you to a veterinary oncologist.
