Masses come in all shapes and sizes and can grow anywhere in the body. At Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan for your pet to prioritize their unique needs. The information below is a general guide to mass removals to help you know what to expect.

What is mass removal in pets?

A mass is an abnormal tissue growth that may be benign or cancerous. Mass removal is the surgical excision of the tissue for biopsy, health, or patient comfort. While some small skin masses can be removed under local anesthesia, others are more complex because of their size, location, or composition and require general anesthesia.

When is mass removal recommended?

Mass removal may be recommended for various reasons, including:

  • Confirmed or suspected cancer — A mass can be removed and analyzed for cancer cells.
  • Appearance — Masses are sometimes removed for aesthetic reasons.
  • Injury or irritation — Some masses are bothersome to pets, resulting in frequent irritation from scratching, chewing, or licking.
  • Location — The mass may be pressing on an organ or important structure.
  • Comfort — Large masses or those near your pet’s joints can restrict movement.

How will I know if the mass is cancerous?

If pre-surgical sampling was inconclusive or unavailable, your veterinarian will recommend sending the removed mass to a reference lab for histopathology. Microscopic analysis will confirm its type and whether it is cancerous or benign. If the mass is cancerous, this testing can also determine whether the entire mass was removed or if another surgery is recommended.

What can I expect during my pet’s recovery?

Recovery will depend on the extent of your pet’s surgery. In addition to standard incision care and post-operative activity restrictions, your pet may have additional bandaging or a drain to prevent fluid from pooling under the skin. Ensure your pet wears an e-collar or approved surgical garment to prevent them from licking or chewing their incision.

If your pet’s mass was sent for review, your veterinarian will follow up with the results and additional treatment recommendations, if needed.
