What is a vulvoplasty?
A vulvoplasty or episioplasty is a reconstructive surgery to remove skin from around the vulva. This procedure may be recommended for female dogs with excess tissue around the vulva due to abnormal conformation (structure) or obesity, or those with recurring skin or urinary tract infections.
During the vulvolplasty, a “C” shaped section of skin and subcutaneous tissue is removed from around the vulva. The incision is closed with sutures in a way that allows the vulva to stand out from the skin, instead of being recessed.
What are the signs that my pet needs a vulvoplasty?
Your veterinarian may recommend a vulvoplasty for the following reasons:
- Excess skin folds around the vulva
- Recurring irritation (dermatitis), scooting, or discharge
- Frequent urinary tract infections
- Urinary incontinence
- Unsuccessful topical or oral medication treatments
What should I expect during my pet’s recovery?
Our team will go over your pet’s care instructions at their discharge appointment. General guidelines include:
- Using an e-collar to prevent your pet from licking or chewing the incision
- Monitoring your pet for lethargy, pain, and signs of infection
- Discouraging scooting, which can damage sutures
- Giving medications according to label directions
- Restricting physical activity until suture removal (10 to 14 days)
- Applying cold compresses to ease discomfort during the first 24 to 48 hours
